Although my path to becoming a science teacher has not been entirely linear, I finally feel like I have chosen the "right path" for my future. Like many others, particular teachers and experiences in school, work, and volunteer settings inspired me to choose this path. However, one critical point in my decision to teach was when I realized the raw value of education. In high school, I had several opportunities to work with children and peers who had to overcome great adversity just to gain an education. Around the same time, I was engaging in typical high school classroom debates about how we might solve social, racial, and environmental issues both locally and around the world. My answer was always the same--education. At this point, I began to understand the power of education and I knew wanted to become a part of it and the movement of education reformation.
As for why I have chosen to become a science teacher, it is largely because I am excited by the natural and physical world. I enjoy experimentation and discovery learning. I am interested in understanding why things are the way they are. By engaging in science and thinking like scientists, students learn to think critically about the world around them and I feel that this is one of life's most important skills.
So my inspiration for becoming a science teacher is pretty simple, really. I see a real power in education and in science, and I want to devote my life to helping others see the same.
